At Work Original Cyn At Work Needlepoint

About Cyn

Cynthia lives with her husband Kevin & son Connor in Boston Massachusetts and the island of Martha's Vineyard, where she has been selling her jewelry since 1992.

My first memory of creating something with my hands was with my favorite aunt. When I was five she taught me how to needlepoint. I loved it and was mesmerized for hours.

After studying business in college, I found myself on Martha’s Vineyard. The beauty of the island and its people inspired me to make it my home. By chance, I met a woman who was looking for help in her bead shop. My interview consisted of driving in a car with her to pick out paint colors. When we returned, she told me I was hired. For five years I was in heaven. I experimented with all kinds of materials while learning about their properties and origins. My next education came from working for an importer of Sterling Silver beads. The progression from retail to wholesale gave me another level of experience. I traveled to Bali to visit production of the silver and all over Central America, for myself, to look for my own materials. Five years later, with the advice of my own boss, I took the leap into self-employment. Many years later, I feel I owe all of my knowledge and success to those two people.

I've always been inspired by my surroundings. Anything at all might reflect itself in my designs: the curves of a staircase, a painting or even the colors of ice cream. You'll always hear music where I work as it is another source of inspiration. I also believe in what's meant to be, and what's original in my style is the result of everything around me. The elements of each piece come together through proximity and chance.

I don’t claim to make art with deep meaning, but I think adornment should be a creative way to express yourself. I hope that people have as much fun wearing my jewelry as it was for me to create it. Almost every piece is one-of-a-kind, made especially for the person who doesn’t want to match everyone else.

I use state-of-the-art stringing wire, which is flexible yet durable and waterproof. Clasps are my signature, so I always make sure they are attractive and function well. I pick out the materials myself, and I'm particular about the color of each bead and how it is drilled.

I love making jewelry. I enjoy presenting and selling my jewelry at shows, which is the best way to meet the people who are buying and wearing my pieces. I get so much out of watching people try them on. Its what brings them to life!

Thank you for your interest.
